Driving By Yourself And International Driver’s License.
The first thing you need to know, is that when you drive yourself in Vietnam, you need to have an international driver’s license. There are many people telling me that they rent motorbikes and drive themselves everywhere without an international driver’s license, or that the police do not check their international driver’s license. That doesn’t mean it’s legal for you to drive yourself. I would like to assure you that it is illegal for you to drive yourself in Vietnam without an international driver’s license.
And when someone drives themselves everywhere without an international driver’s license, just because the police don’t do it, they don’t check. So why in Ha Giang does the police check an international driver’s license??? Because in 2019 there were 2 foreign tourists who died when they were driving motorbikes by themselves and had a traffic accident. After that, the Ha Giang Provincial Safety Police issued a strict law to check the international driver’s license of tourists every day. In addition, they also visit each motel, hotel and motorbike rental business to disseminate the law in case self-driving tourists need to have an international driver’s license. Most recently on December 10, 2022, 1 more foreign tourist died due to self-driving, and on December 14, 2022 there was a death of a Vietnamese tourist…. Besides the accidents. Traffic accidents caused by self-driving but not fatal tourists abound in Ha Giang. And I myself have met in person and seen a lot.
